How do you upgrade the dvSwitch?

We see that vSphere 5.1 to vSphere 5.5 needs a lot of background work and takes a long time to process like taking the approvals, scheduling the upgrades, implementing the changes and finally making everything work after completion.

So in my Previous I wrote about upgrading the vSphere 5.1 to vSphere 5.5 here

We have come across a sequence of steps starting from upgrading the vCenter, VUM, ESXi, VMs and VMFS and is the time to upgrade the dvSwitch. dvSwitch also needs a upgrade if you are upgrading it to vSphere 5.5.

Here are the few questions that I have to ask myself before I proceed upgrading the dvSwitch

  1. What will happen if something went wrong with the dvSwitch upgrade process?
  2. What happens to my VMs when my dvSwitch goes offline?
  3. …….

To answer all these questions VMware has a solution, that is taking a backup of the dvSwitch configuration before proceeding with the dvSwitch upgrade. Yeah, you can take the upgrade and then go for the dvSwitch upgrade, if something goes wrong with the upgrade or is not working as expected then simply restore the dvswitch from the backup.

How do I take the backup of a dvSwitch?

To take the backup of the dvSwitch, you need to login to the vCenter Server using the vSphere Web Client.

  1. Login to the vCenter Server using the Web Client.
  2. click on the vcenter server, then go to networking, locate the dvswitch, right click on the dvswitch and then click on Export configuration. Name the configuration file and place it iin a safe location.

How to upgrade dvSwitch?

You can do the upgrade either using by using the vSPhere client or web client.

  1. Log in to the vSphere Client and select the Networking inventory view.
  2. Select the vSphere distributed switch in the inventory pane.
  3. On the Summary tab, next to Version, select Upgrade.
  4. The upgrade wizard details the features available to the upgraded distributed switch that are not available to the earlier version.
  5. Select the vSphere Distribued Switch version to upgrade to

How to Restore dvSwitch?

  1. Login to the vCenter Server using the Web Client.
  2. click on the vcenter server, then go to networking, locate the dvswitch, right click on the dvswitch and then click on restore configuration then locate the configuration file to restore
