What is vCloud Director Cell and the requirements for installing vCD?

In this post I will be talking about the vCloud Director Component.

  • vCloud Director Cell actually runs on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server.
  • vCloud DIrector Server runs a cloud Webserver portal for the vcloud director webconsole
As part of the vCloud Director Installation and Configuration we will be installing the vcloud director cell on a RHEL, and connect the vCloud Director Cell to the Shared Database, it establishes the connection to vCenter Server, vshield Manager and ESX/ESXi hosts.

What are the requirements for installing the vCloud Director?

  1. Physical Server or Virtual Machine. VM is preferred.
  2. LDAP Server for the User Management
  3. SMTP Server for the notifications.
  4. vCloud director Database.
  5. NFS Server for VMware vSphere vAPP file transfer Service.

Supported vCloud Director Server Operating Systems:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (64 bit), Update 4
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (64 bit), Update 5
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (64 bit), Update 6
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (64 bit), Update 8
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (64 bit), Update 1
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (64 bit), Update 2

Disk Space                     : 950MB of free space for Installation
Memory Requirements : atleast 1GB of memory but 2GB recommended.
Linux Software packages  : libXdmcp package

Supported vCloud Director Databases: vCloud Director supports Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases. The most current information about supported databases is available from the VMware Product Interoperability Matrixes at http://partnerweb.vmware.com/comp_guide/sim/interop_matrix.php
